Query understanding

Your query is parsed into: a lexical form for BM25 matching, a dense embedding for semantic retrieval, an entity form for Knowledge Graph lookup, and a task form (comparison? how-to? factual summary?). Google also detects if it's a YMYL query — these are handled more conservatively and require stronger authority signals.

Query fan-out

The original query is exploded into 8–20 synthetic sub-queries covering every latent intent dimension: time frame variants, entity-linked expansions, format variants ("printable plan"), follow-up questions ("what to eat during training"). Each sub-query runs in parallel against different indexes: web, Knowledge Graph, YouTube transcripts, Google Shopping, and specialist verticals.

Multi-source retrieval

Each sub-query hits the appropriate retrieval stack. Web queries use MUVERA — multi-vector document retrieval that represents your page as multiple semantic segments, each with its own embedding. Perplexity rewrites your query before searching. It doesn't pass your exact words to Google/Bing — it reformulates them to improve retrieval quality. The reformulated query often contains synonyms, entity expansions, and specificity markers you didn't use. This means the actual search that fetches your page may be quite different from what the user typed.

Perplexity sends the reformulated query to both Google and Bing APIs simultaneously. It merges the result sets, deduplicates, and applies its own relevance ranking. How ChatGPT retrieves and cites content — two modes

Training data mode (no search)

For many queries, ChatGPT answers from its training data alone — a static corpus with a knowledge cutoff. Brands that appear frequently in high-quality sources (Wikipedia, major press, specialist publications, forums) before the training cutoff are better represented in the model's "worldview." This is why historical brand authority and editorial coverage matters even for AI optimisation.

When browsing is active, ChatGPT generates its own search queries — different from what the user typed. It sends these to Bing's API, receives a list of URLs, and selects specific ones to fetch and read. The key insight: ChatGPT picks which URLs to read based on title relevance and snippet quality in the Bing results. If your title and meta description don't signal relevance to ChatGPT's internally-generated query wording, it won't request your URL at all.
